During normal times, Historic Milwaukee, Inc. throws a huge party every September, free and open to all. Doors Open Milwaukee typically draws thousands of visitors and there’s usually much anticipation, and lots of planning leading up to the event. I have collaborated with Historic Milwaukee for a few years now in designing and producing the Doors Open event guide (I designed the Doors Open logo as well, a few years ago). The Doors Open event guide is a 32-page printed guide that is published in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and also distributed at local favorites such as Colectivo Coffee, as well as at the annual event itself. Designing the look for the event guide is a large undertaking, as is managing the production of the guide. There’s a cover, front matter that introduces special Historic Milwaukee, Inc. programming, lots of photos, and comprehensive listings (including site-specific icons) for each and every site that opens to the public for the event. There is also a series of complex maps, designed by a cartographer who I work closely with throughout the process. The objective in designing this guide is to make it as easy to navigate as possible, while also introducing a design that will appeal to a very wide audience.
