I have done and do pro-bono, donate blood 4 times a year and volunteer when I can (which I won't lie hasn't been much in the last year). But I also don't go around looking for a pat on the back for doing so. Maybe a cookie? Some people do need that attention. Others yet will use that attention for an ulterior motive i.e. public relations to turn profit. Deny all you want. Otherwise the two would NOT be associated with one another so closely.

However, somebody needs to stick up for the small(er) shops that simply can't afford to run a dedicated pro-bono shop. And then get little to no recognition because their creative freedoms are somewhat limited by their clients. But isn't that part of the business solving a client's problem? Trust me if all of us could donate more of our time I would believe we would. Or am I being naive?

Seriously though I cannot stress enough that the work that comes out of there is some of the best work anywhere. And that the time and sacrifice that Gary and Mike put into this great cause does not go unnoticed.

So cheer's to all the great work that you guys do really do. And if it's a pat on the back you want, then a pat on the back is what you get. (and some nuts to go with it.)

ps Thanks for the Wordpress theme Ben. Do you want a pat on the back also?

Uuuu, heated debate. The site is finally working. So, Jim, I work at BVK and have worked at several other agencies. Question for you...have you ever done a pro bono piece or tried giving back a little? Think about it...If your dad was a plumber and your neighbor lady had a problem with the toilet and couldn't afford to fix it, or just because you give a damn, you'd help right? Say your Mother was a doctor, you sort of expect her to give a little time to help out those who need help with little to no insurance. My friend, it's called using your skills (whatever they may be) to help out someone with little or no voice. This stuff doesn't happen through osmosis. It takes a concerted effort on many fronts. I like to think of it as volunteer time. I feel good about working on this. I'm not splitting atoms, but doing good pro bono is as hard as anything else in advertising. You have committees, board members, testing, and the list goes on to get through. It's hard as hell to sell it through and when it doesn't work and you feel your sitting with something great, something that resonates, then you're damn right you take it to someone who can use it. Be it Chicago or New Jersey. This isn't anyone preaching from a peach crate, it's simply common sense and a source of common decency for those who need. Since when did doing good for those who need it become such a big deal. I'm sure the debate between SERVE and BVK will go on and on and on...but really, is it a bad thing? Is it so horrible that SERVE exists? I saw a large array of work up there. And I have one final thing to add, Gary Mueller and Mike Voss put more of their PERSONAL money and time into making this happen than any of us will ever know. You need better battles to fight beyond people who volunteer their time and efforts to do pro bono work. SERVE has always asked for volunteers, maybe you should try it.

You can "HIGHLY doubt" all you want. Of course some of the work is done during normal business hours. I'm willing to bet that happens at most, if not all, agencies. I do work at BVK, but I have no vested interest in "spinning it." I just know that people also put in extra hours outside of working doing this stuff, myself included. I also created and manage this site for free, but doubt away.

Of course you're correct, as your link shows, that agencies do things like find other clients when stuff doesn't go right. I don't know if that's the case with the blood donation posters or not though, as I was never involved with it. I'm sure there's lots of people who would agree that pro-bono work should be in it's own category (myself included), but as far as I know, the 99 isn't run with concrete categories like some other shows. Maybe the board will be willing to share how judging works, but I doubt it's really necessary -might be interesting though.

As for the student competition, no one said they couldn't win Best in Show, but come on, really? Do you really think that a student is going to best EVERYBODY? I don't know why no students got a medal this time around, you'd have to ask the people running the show. Maybe there weren't enough entries to warrant giving one out or maybe they judges didn't think anything was worthy of an actual nut.

I HIGHLY doubt the people at Serve work for free. It's a great marketing tool for BVK as well as a great way for non-profits to get some nice free work.

But I agree with steve. Why can't student's win Best of Show? Shouldn't Pro-bono be a ONE category award also? The pro-bono guys can pretty much invent a campaign for award show purposes, then they pitch it to any client that will take it so that they qualify for the award show.

Case in point, this award winner, http://www.servemarketing.org/serve_work_pages/blood_donation_2.htm, started off as this...

http://creativity-online.com/?action=search%3Amixed_results&begLim=&begLimC=&begLimW=&endLim=&endLimW=&endLimC=&issue=&culture=&opinion=&range=&range_begin=&range_end=&mode=&type=&tab=work&author=&search_text=bvk.

So when did Chicago become, New Jersey? Probably when they couldn't get the ad printed by Chicago....

So Benjamin stop spinning it just because you work there....

PS They have done student competitions in the past. Check your facts.

Really, Steve? Let's see, for starters, one is created by people who are ad professionals who are giving their time and skills for free to help a cause and the other is work by people who are students. i.e. They have never done this before and the club is recognizing young talent as a way to support them.
